Alycia

Welcome to Fort Gratiot Middle School! My name is Alycia Shagena and I am thrilled to be your middle school principal again this year. We are excited to have you and your child as part of our learning community. The staff at Fort Gratiot is a dedicated, tenured staff that strives to provide your student with a first class education. We are committed to advocate, innovate, and educate!

As a building, we will continue to implement CHAMPS. CHAMPS is a proactive and positive approach to classroom management. The goal of CHAMPS is to create a system in which students are responsible, motivated, and highly engaged in a task or assignment. While the implementation of CHAMPS may vary slightly from teacher to teacher, the basic CHAMPs acronym is defined as follows:

Conversation: Can students converse during this activity? About what? With whom? For how long?

Help: How do students get your attention for help? How do students get questions answered? What should they do while they wait for you?

Activity: What is the expected end product of this activity? What is the task or objective?

Movement: For what reasons can students get out of their seats during this activity? Do they need permission to do so?

Participation: What behavior shows that students are participating or not participating?

Success: There are no questions for this one. When CHAMPs expectations are met, students will be successful.

As a district, we will continue to use Skyward to monitor your child and their progress. Skyward will be a terrific resource to provide information about your child’s attendance, assignments, grades, schedules, etc.  If you do not have access to Skyward, please contact the office at Fort Gratiot Middle.

Keeping an open line of communication with parents and the community if very important. Skyward will be one tool to communicate and stay in tune, but please visit the Fort Gratiot Middle School web page (http://fortgratiot.phasd.us/) for announcements, important information, and the calendar of events. You can also find updates Facebook athttps://www.facebook.com/FGStrong.

We are looking forward to a great year!
